BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games
(BOCOG) and state television have reiterated their pledge to permit uncensored
coverage of next month's Olympics, the South China Morning Post reported.
"You can do live broadcasts on the streets of Beijing and in Tiananmen
Square. According to the regulations for the Games, and the period leading up to
it, foreign journalists have the freedom to broadcast and conduct their own
interviews," said Sun Weijia, BOCOG's media operations director.
Overseas television crews have complained that security guards have stopped
them from broadcasting from sensitive locations such as Tiananmen Square.
Jiang Heping, director of the state-run CCTV Olympics Channel, was quoted by
the official China News Service as saying: "There will be no 30-second delay in
CCTV's live broadcasting during the Beijing Olympic Games ... audiences will be
able to see the action when it happens."
Other media reports claim the Communist Party's publicity department had
ordered provincial and lower-level TV stations to delay the live coverage by
about 10 seconds to give censors room to cut unwanted content, including
political and racial slogans or gestures made by athletes and spectators.
